lullaby; loreena mckennitt
When Sin claps his broad wings over the battle,
And sails rejoicing in the flood of Death;
When souls are torn to everlasting fire,
And fiends of Hell rejoice upon the slain.
O who can stand?

There's something about this song that, whilst powerful and ominous, is equally evocative and beautiful; it's a song about strength and about war, both of which seem in at least some ways to suit the pair quite well.

terrible thought; poe
A terrible thought has moved into my mind
Like an unwanted room-mate drunk on wine
It feeds on my happiness won't pay the rent
I must take proper measures to evict it

A general song of frustration, mostly referring to the prophetic dreams - because for the first few weeks at least, they must have sucked.

the child is gone; fiona apple
I suddenly feel like a different person
From the roots of my soul come a gentle coercion
And I ran my hand o’er a strange inversion
A vacancy that just did not belong
The child is gone

Something's always struck me about the pre-Michiru flashback Haruka has in episode 106 - specifically, how young she looks. Not to say either Haruka or Michiru were necessarily naive at any point, but if nothing else, the episode really hammers home the loss of innocence and the application of pragmatism to ideals experienced by both of them as a result of their mission - and also throws them in strong contrast to their inner-senshi counterparts.

ribbons undone; tori amos
You're a girl
Rising from a shell
Running through spring
With summer's hand in reach now
It is your time
It is your time
So just run with ribbons undone

Again I must refer you to a screencap of episode 106 - specially this one. I've always found this sketch beautiful for various reasons; not only is Haruka almost leaping off the page - flying, really, so absolutely free and unrestrained despite any circumstances in which she might find herself, because we all know nothing can hope to last and contain all of her - but also that it is a sketch Michiru did and the sort of depth and quiet love in being able to see and capture in paint that side of Haruka speaks volumes of their understanding of each other.

in the dark; harland
Here in the dark I feel electric
I sense my skin in between the waves
I am human, I am criminal
But I feel life here in my heart again

There's a tranquil calm to the song that's not so much happy or complacent as it is content, which I think is really the feeling that comes across most strongly with Haruka and Michiru. They are acutely - in some cases even cheerfully - aware of their own flaws and morally-questionable actions, but it does not change who they are, who they know each other to be, and how hard they strive for everything they stand for.

have you got it in you?; imogen heap
It's getting worse, against all the odds
it's getting worse
...
What's the hurry? Have you got it?
Have you got it in you?

A somewhat-frantic beat captures the race against time for the majority of Sailor Moon Super, and the fact that - against all odds or at least all their efforts - it does seem to be getting worse. The repetition of have you got it in you, in light of what Haruka and Michiru know they must be prepared to do for their mission, seems like a question the pair could easily and frequently ask themselves.

one line; pj harvey
All through the rising sun,
all through the circling years
You were the only one
Who could have brought me here
And I draw a line
To your heart today
To your heart from mine
One line to keep us safe

Also known as a world without Haruka is not a world worth saving. Another song of safety in war, particularly applicable to the pair who, for all that they eventually grow to trust and work with the inner senshi, are built so solidly on their love and trust for each other that when it comes to it, saving a world for one person (well, amongst other things) doesn't seem like too bad a deal at all.

the other side; scissor sisters
If it takes another life I'll wait for you on the other side
Everything that comes to me as good belongs to you
I'll count our blessings as I wait for you on the other side
Good luck and I will see you through

Even in death - which does seem to happen or threaten to happen quite a bit to these guys - Haruka and Michiru are together. In episode 198 in particular, it is impossible not to be struck by the intensity of their feelings, so clear it is that as long as they are facing it together, no threat could possibly hope to conquer them. A song somewhat morbid, yet with so much devotion in every line that it suits H/M perfectly.

after the bombs; the decemberists
After the bombs subside
and this long campaign calls it good night
We pinch at our skin,
We wonder how we escaped harm

If nothing else this song suits H/M for pointing out the pure irony of their situation; they spend the majority of the series being quite willing to sacrifice themselves (and a few other much-less-willing people) to the cause and yet, rather miraculously, nobody gets hurt. It would almost be an anticlimax if it weren't so lovely.

last of days; a fine frenzy
I watched you disappear into the clouds
Swept away into another town
The world carries on without you
But nothing remains the same
I'll be lost without you
Until the last of days

Also known as you're so unfair, Michiru, to leave for a world of your own. A song of intense and unadulterated love. I could go into the ways in which this song suits Haruka and Michiru in all their steadfast devotion and subtle passion, but the lyrics here really speak for themselves.

miles; over the rhine
Your heart on mine
beating double time
but we have promises to keep
and miles to go before we sleep

I would have ended this whole thing on Last of Days, but - though I don't think my point here is musically valid - I do enjoy the irony that the steady beat of this song cuts straight into the fadey-out-quiet left by its predecessor. It sort of helps make the point here: the battle doesn't ever really end for Haruka and Michiru. Since the Silver Millenium, through the twentieth century, and all the way to Crystal Tokyo, they'll be the soldiers they chose to be, saving the world they chose to save, carrying that damn Outer-Senshi cross. Given the centuries and lives across which their legacy and love span, it only feels right to end this mix on a note of endlessness. Also, because it was this or I Kissed a Girl; I Liked It.

Downloads are appreciated because that's the point; comments are loved because I am vain. ♥

Sailor Moon - By your side

They spend the majority of the series being quite willing to sacrifice themselves (and a few other much-less-willing people) to the cause and yet, rather miraculously, nobody gets hurt.

This is so true.

Also, words probably can't express how much I love this, but still! It's so fitting, your song choice is really really really good. <3 'Last Of Our Days' really is that quote. Again, I really can't express in words how happy seeing this gorgeous mix makes me. <3 I'm definitely going to download it now.

Also, rofl, you should've put 'I Kissed A Girl' in there.

falling not waving

Well. I guess Doctor Tomoe gets hurt, but he also quite cheerfully lets Pluto just steal his daughter (...then again, she does have rather a large staff) so I guess he was never going to have a great time.

I considered putting 'I Kissed a Girl' in as a bonus track, but I couldn't quite bring myself to do it. :P

I'm glad you liked!

Death Note - Pink of all pinks

Pluto and Saturn get hurt at the end at the end of Stars, though. Even though I'm not so sure whether fading away into sparkles really hurts or not.

Heh, Lan, you're inspiring me to also make one. Although not Haruka/Michiru, since I could never make such a gorgeous fanmix of them the way you can. <3 Ilu and your creativity.

I love me you too.

Make one!! Make it for PGSM Usagi, God knows you're better at her than I'll ever be.

AIR - A dream of the sky

Freudian slip?

Ahaha, I have no clue for who. Maybe I'll do the general series or something, so I don't run out of songs before I have any noted down.

Sailor Moon - My Deep Sea

Also, I just got to listening it, and I think it's even more gorgeous now. It's just so HarukaxMichiru and ugh, I have no words. You rule, Lan. You own my soul, but hey, you can have the rest too if you want. :P

Aww. Your heart? can I have your heart? :D Oh and your smile too, it's pretty.

... and all your money.

Heh. I'm really glad you like it. In some bits it doesn't flow as well as it could, but i am also no musical genius, so, whatever.

Lol at inadvertent essay writing. :p

The lyrics (and their association to H&M) brought tears to my eyes. I'm not even kidding. And I haven't even listened to the tracks yet. Way to go, you <3

Shuttuuup, I can't help how avidly I squee over these guys, okay? XDD

And I'm so glad you liked it, though I hope you didn't cry too much because I hate it when my eyes are all puffy and you should too. Though it's sort of nifty that I can evoke this sort of reaction? Anyway, yay. :D

I don't know most of these, but I kind of want to download this tomorrow now. It seems pretty, judging from the lyrics. Which yes, I'm aware is odd to say about some of them.

I think there's a certain state of prettiness achievable even with very morbid stuff - if an artist can achieve a feeling of beauty with a poem of death, then I'm guessing the artist did something very right. Anyway, very good songs are just always beautiful because they enrich the world! IMO, anyway.

I lied: Downloading now. Probably won't listen until tomorrow, though, as I'm going to sleep shortly.

I read this yesterday and squeed. I won't download right now, because - you know how my computer is. But it looks fantastic and just proves to show, once more, that you are the master of everything Haruka/Michiru. You really seem to understand their relationship and their individual characteristics down to the very tiniest detail. *loves*

Thanks so much for making this! I look forward to enjoying it.

Aww, yay! I don't know if you're aware of the book House of Leaves, but pretty much all of Haunted was written to accompany it and if you read that book whilst listening to the music it makes so much sense and is just generally a surreal experience. Definitely an epic part of my Poe experience.

Once Upon A Dream

It's the most insanely difficult to read book in the world. The way it's written is just - mind-boggling! I mean - the bits where you have to hold it in front of a mirror to read it? LOL! But yeah, I love how she and her brother did that together.
